Century Plant (Agave americana)
American century plant is a handsome xeric plant with blue-green leaves. It produces a tall, striking bloom stalk at maturity and then the mother plant dies and is replaced by ‘pups’ - small offshoots at the base of the plant. Century plant lives for 10 to 25 years. It is often as tall as 6 ft when mature. Its leaves have sharp spines, and the plant should be placed away from traffic areas in the garden.
Century plant needs well draining, gravelly soils and full sun to thrive. It is extremely drought tolerant once established. Too much moisture will cause root rot. It is hardy to about 15-20 degrees and can suffer winter damage or even be damaged permanently in harsh winters.
Century plant makes a stunning focal point or can be planted en masse when spaced properly. It works well as a potted plant as well.
