Prairie onion is a bulbous perennials that is quite drought resistant when established. The leaves are flat, narrow, chive-like. It sports charming pinkish or lavender flowers. The flowers can persist for 2-3 weeks. All parts have an oniony smell when cut or bruised. The leaves appear in spring and often die back by the time of flowering.
Prairie onion is easy to grow in average garden conditions. It tolerates poor, dry or rocky soils. It best grown en masse. Works well in rock gardens, meadows, native plant gardens, naturalized areas, cottage gardens, perennial gardens or borders.
